Why Habitat?

The Habitat for Humanity movement in Canada is working toward a world where everyone has a safe, decent and affordable place to call home. We bring communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. We know that by working together with corporate, community and construction partners…and marshalling the efforts of legions of volunteers…we provide a solid foundation for better, healthier lives around the world, across this great country and right here in our own community.  In Halton-Mississauga, we have been in operation since 1999. Net proceeds from our Burlington, Milton and Mississauga ReStores (our social enterprise) pay for 100% of our affiliate's operational and administrative costs AND contribute more than $1,5 million toward our build program annually.  For this reason, 100% of every dollar donated to Habitat Halton-Mississauga is used to build homes for local families in need of safe and decent housing.  Research undertaken amongst Habitat families nationwide shows that, upon receipt of a Habitat home, children’s academic performance improves, families are healthier and become more vested/involved in their communities.   Every $1 invested in Habitat for Humanity yields a $4 Social Return on Investment (SROI).

The Impact of a Legacy Gift - The Estate of John T. McCallum

Meet the Shaikh Family

“The meaning of home” for this family was expressed in many different ways.  But when asked what home meant to them, all six family members mentioned being in a safe place where they could spend time together as a family.  A Habitat home changed everything.  Instead of living day to day, the family can now grow and flourish in their new surroundings.  The estate of John T. McCallum helped to make this family's dream come true allowing the memory of John to live on through his legacy.
