Summer Student Profile: Meet Sonia Kodgule

Sonia Kodgule came from India to Canada a year ago, and she is already getting involved in her local community to make a positive difference. Inspired by her experiences volunteering at DoorStep School in India, an organization which seeks to provide education to children who can’t afford to go to school, Sonia is working at Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga this summer as a Hospitality and Events Coordinator.
Her major project is working on Habitat’s annual volunteer recognition celebration. It involves “building the research list for venues, things like catering (and) basically just working on the research list,” Sonia said.
She has been enjoying her work at Habitat both because of her project and because of the positive office environment. “The people are really nice. It’s fun overall,” Sonia said, adding that every day she looks forward to meeting new people and spending time with her co-workers.
Sonia’s hobbies include dancing, working out and reading (but just “a little, not a lot,” she said with a laugh). She has also just started driving classes, which she said she is enjoying so far.
In the fall, Sonia will begin her second year of studying mechanical engineering at York University. She wants to take electives in psychology and maybe environmental studies. After graduating, she plans to get her MBA and then find a job. Sonia brings a lot to the table and Habitat is thrilled to have her on board this summer!
